What you should look for when hiring a Seattle portrait photographer

My TOP 4 Things To consider when hiring a photographer

I get it, there are a lot of photographers out there competing for your attention. It can be a daunting process. But if you know what to look for when you are hiring a Seattle portrait photographer, it can make the process much more fun. Making sure a photographer suits your style, your budget and is a good match with your personality helps assure you that you’ll make the perfect choice for your needs. Keep reading for my tips on the best ways to narrow your search.

Check out photographers Instagram & websites or ask friends about photographers they’ve hired.

Often, a good place to start is to ask around. Tap into your networks and see who the people that you trust recommend. Whether you have referrals or you are starting from scratch, start by checking out photographer’s Instagram pages, and websites to make sure your styles are a good match.

But wait! How do you know what photography style you like?  This one is easy. When you look through photos on websites or instagram, what draws your eye?  Do you like photos that show true colors, are more saturated or light and airy?   Do you like a casual style (ie people interacting with each other, not looking at the camera) or something more formal (a more posed style)? These are all things to ask yourself as you’re looking at images. You want to look for photographers that produce images that match what you like.

Does the photographer offer the service you want?

This one seems obvious but it is important to take note.  If you are looking for a senior photographer and you are looking at a website that only offers wedding photography, no matter how much you like that photographers style, they might not be a good fit for you.  Many photographers have multiple specialties, while some have a very specific specialty, so make sure those specialties are featured on their site or on Instagram so you can be assured they have experience in the particular service you need.  Experience does matter, and not all photographers specialize in everything.

Consider your budget and what you get for your money.

Most photographers have budget and package information readily available on their website.  If they don’t, ask! Make sure any photographer you are considering fits within your budget.

Photographers offerings are going to vary. Some offer packages with prints, some offer digital images, some only prints. Some offer lower cost mini sessions throughout the year, so consider what works best for you and book accordingly.

Make sure before you book with a photographer you know exactly what you will be getting after the session. The photographer you choose should ask you to sign a contract that should spell out everything that will be delivered to you, what the cost for the service is, and how long you will wait before the images are delivered.

Does the photographer’s personality work well with yours?

If you’ve found someone who’s style you like, and who offers what you want and is within your budget, the next big step is making sure they are a good fit for you and/or your family.  I think this is a big one.  To get the most authentic photos, you want to feel comfortable and relaxed.  Who’s behind the camera is a key part of helping you feel that way.  If you want to talk to your photographer before you book, most, myself included, offer a free 15 minute phone call to talk over your vision, philosophy and what to expect in a session.  This is the perfect opportunity to get to know your photographer’s personality style.

Do they communicate their process well? Do they address your questions? Do you feel comfortable talking with them?  Can you see yourself being able to relax with them, have fun with them?  If the answer is yes, you have found your perfect match & you are setting yourself up for a successful session and beautiful, meaningful photos.

Of course I would love for you to choose me to be your photographer, but more importantly, I want you to choose the person who is the perfect fit for YOU.

Knowing what you should look for when hiring a Seattle portrait photographer will make the process much easier. I hope these tips help you feel less overwhelmed.
